This 12-day small-group trip follows Borneo’s rainforests, rivers and wetlands through Sarawak and Sabah. It combines wildlife viewing with time in Kuching, Mulu, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and the Kinabatangan region, alongside visits that introduce local culture and daily life. Travel by a mix of internal flights, boat journeys and road transfers to reduce long overland stretches and keep the focus on the places you are visiting. In Batang Ai National Park, learn about Iban longhouse life and the forest setting that shapes it. In Mulu, walk to Deer Cave and Lang Cave, then continue to Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. In Sabah, look for wildlife along the Kinabatangan River, visit an orangutan rehabilitation centre in Sandakan and spend time with local conservation efforts in Kampung Abai. Accommodation ranges from hotels to a more basic jungle lodge with shared bathroom facilities. On some forest walks, paths can be wet and slippery, and getting in and out of low-rise longtail boats can also be tricky. The included domestic flights have strict baggage limits, so travelling light is important.
